Sometimes I wish that green cursor really was over my head so I could control my sexy body (stupidity) from a different perspective
So due to the crazy schedule that I have, I don’t get many breaks and the few I do get, they usually involve a lot of time dedicated towards clearing my head and revisiting things that I have drifted away from. However, recently I’ve found to be bored with the extra time I’ve had and am desperately trying to find something to soak up my extra time other than pushing Stumble 100 times a day. Since my chances of finding a girl seems to be as likely as another Heath Ledger movie coming out, it looks like I’ll be sticking to video games.
And then when I went home this past weekend for a wedding, I saw a game that I remember taking over my life in middle school. I would have to fight with my sisters to play it and I remember easily devoting at least three hours a day to this game (see the trend with my chances of getting girls?) Everyone I know loved it and still raves about how awesome it was back in the day. The Sims. I reinstalled it as well as every other friggin’ expansion set we “had” to get. After only 5 minutes (which turned into another 3 hour rampage), I remembered how amazing this game is. However, when I really think about it, I have to wonder why it’s so addicting. Are we as people so lame that we need to simulate another life to be entertained? Does working a fake job and buying fake things really give us satisfaction? Are people actually reading this blog? All of these questions could be answered with a “yes”, but I feel like there’s a little more to it. The real reason why we (yes, I’m including you) love these games is because it’s our only chance to play god. The game manufacturer, Maxis, in particular has provided so many opportunities for us to control people, cities, buildings, etc., and have made a crapload of money in the process shows that my statement at least some logic behind it.
On September 7th, Maxis will be coming out with a game that I myself am pumped for, Spore. Now I don’t care if you play video games, check out the game. I don’t see how people could not want to play it since this game rumbles at everyone’s god complex. There’s no question in my mind that this game is going to be huge! This game targets all types of gamers but more importantly, all types of people. In fact, I remember walking down the street talking to my friend about this game and some random, eavesdropping woman was so intrigued that she had to interrupt the conversation to figure out what I was talking about. I think what it comes down to is that people like having control. It’s not necessarily out of greed, it’s just a chance to be a leader for once or be something special. Furthermore, games like these have some kind of weird spiritual connection. Religion is not factual, but based off of faith. However, with a game like this, everyone gets the opportunity to instill themselves into something that seems real enough. It definitely would be cool to see things from a different view point other than our “first person”.
